Author Guidelines

Updated March 2020

  1. General rules

1.1 The objective of XIPHIAS GLADIUS is to offer an area for reflection and dissemination of different scientific works, taking as a reference the basis of humanism. As a consequence of this scientific and specialized nature, the Journal does not include articles for simple dissemination or those that exclusively express opinions instead of conclusions obtained after an investigation.

1.2. The XIPHIAS GLADIUS accepts original and unpublished articles on the subject of the publication that will be studied by the Editorial Board for possible publication. It is essential that authors have a doctorate in order to publish, except for exceptional cases that will be studied individually by the Editorial Board.

1.3 Acceptance will require the positive judgment of an expert from the Editorial Board, maintaining the anonymity in the evaluation process of both the author and the evaluator. This blind peer review will determine its acceptance, its acceptance with reservations or its non-acceptance. In the case of acceptance with reservations, the article will be returned to the author for adaptation according to the evaluator's suggestions. Once completed, it will be returned to the journal to restart the evaluation process.

1.4 The Editorial Board reserves the right to publish positively evaluated articles in the number of the Journal it deems most appropriate.

1.5 The same author may not publish two articles in the same issue or in consecutive issues, with the exception of the reviews section.

1.6 This sending implies the transfer of all rights for its future dissemination.

1.7 The publication in the XIPHIAS GLADIUS journal does not give the right to any remuneration. Editing rights belong to the Francisco de Vitoria University and its permission is required for any reproduction. For this reason, the authors must sign an agreement for the transfer of rights and a declaration of conflict of interest. This is a necessary requirement for the publication of the article. In any case, it will be necessary to indicate the origin of any total or partial reproduction.

1.8 The institutional affiliation and the e-mail address of the authors will be published together with the articles and contributions for possible communications with the readers.

1.9 Antiplagiarism: The journal in its antiplagiarism policy to safeguard the originality of publishable manuscripts, makes use of the Turnitin tool. In this way XIPHIAS GLADIUS can maintain the standard of publishing unpublished works.

1.10 Code of Ethics: The journal adheres to the ethical criteria of COPE (Ethics Committee for Publications) and applies for membership. XIPHIAS GLADIUS's code of ethics is addressed to editors, reviewers, authors and anyone related to the publication. (See specific section for more information.)

1.11 OPEN ACCESS: The journal is published in open access (Open Access) belongs to DOAJ and works under the Creative Commons, Attibution-Non Commercial and International Recognition 4.0 license (CC BY-NC 4.0) This license allows others to mix, adjust and build from your work for non-commercial purposes, and although your new creations must acknowledge your authorship and cannot be used commercially, they do not have to be licensed under the same terms.

1.12 Fees: The journal does not have any type of publication fees. In other words, it does not charge authors or their institutions publication fees known as "article processing charges" (article processing charge), it is alien to the author payment system (author pay model or author side fee model), and of subscriptions. XIPHIAS GLADIUS therefore does not have any type of APCs (Article Processing Charges), being a journal 100% subsidized by an academic institution.

1.13 Editorial process: The journal follows the editorial process of receipt of manuscripts, first formal and anti-plagiarism review, first admission by the journal's publisher (30 days), double-blind peer evaluation process (90 days), possible modifications by authors (15 days), spelling correction (15 days), layout (10 days). Based on its positive evaluation by the reviewers, the article will be considered accepted (a certificate may be requested); the author may initiate its dissemination through the link on the official website, as of its publication.

  1. The journal is structured into three sections:

2.1 Studies: A different study theme for each issue, proposed by the Journalistic Board. The journal will invite known experts in the field to participate and will accept work of interest related to the proposed theme

Studies may be between 5,000 and 10,000 words

2.2 Research: Space open to different research related to the journal’s general field of interest. Research articles of a theme freely chosen by the author may also be proposed, as long as they may be adjusted to the informative objectives of this publication.

Research articles submitted to the journal must be between 3,000 and 6,000 words

Clarifying information for both cases:

Articles proposed to the Study and Research sections of the journal must propose research contrasted with the necessary internal unit and the relevant contributions that are characteristic of a scientific publication’s content.

Regarding word count, the bibliography, footnotes and abstract are not included.

2.3 Reviews. Of recently published works related to the journal’s field of interest. As a general rule, reviews are accepted of works published within the last few years, although in the case where a certain work is deemed of great importance, this time period may be extended.

The Reviews must maintain the suggested structure for the articles in their sections Title, Author, Summary, Introduction, Analysis, Conclusions and must also include the bibliography section. In addition, the references of the reviewed work must include the ISBN, DOI of the work and web address of the book in the publisher (all these fields are required).

Reviews must be between 1,000 and 2,000 words.

They must be preceded by the work’s full reference, in the following order: Author, title, publisher, place of issue, year of publication and number of pages.

Otherwise, the article will be returned for adaptation to the guidelines that the journal follows; You must also pass an anti-plagiarism control tool; Once these steps have been completed, all articles will be subject to Double Blid Review. This blind peer review will determine your acceptance, your acceptance with reservations or your non-acceptance. Once completed, it will be returned to the magazine to restart the evaluation process.

The same article author may not publish articles in consecutive issues.

The Journal will send an acknowledgment of receipt of the papers received and once they have been evaluated, they will inform the interested party of their acceptance or, in the case of a negative evaluation, they will proceed to return them. The Editorial Board reserves the right to publish positively evaluated articles in the issue of the Journal that it deems most appropriate.

Each of the sections maintains its specific selection policies, which are stated below:

Studies

The Study Selection Policy contemplates the selection of those original articles of scientific quality that respond to the call to publish (call for paper) on the specific topic of study proposed, different in each issue of the Journal and proposed by the Directorate and the Editorial Committee, on current issues that concern communication and humanities at its intersection with different research areas and disciplines. The Magazine will invite renowned experts in the field to collaborate and will accept collaborations of interest on the proposed topic. The articles presented in the Study section must propose a research contrasted with the necessary internal unity and the relevant contributions that characterize the contents of a scientific publication. The studies will have between 4,000 and 10,000 words (neither the bibliography, nor the footnotes, nor the abstract will be counted). These items will undergo the Double Blind Peer Review.

Research

The Research Selection Policy contemplates the selection of articles whose research deals with any general subject related to the field of reflection and dissemination of the Journal, that is, communication in general based on humanism and with an interdisciplinary character. Free-choice research articles can be submitted subject to the disclosure objectives of this publication. The articles submitted to the Investigations section of the Journal, must propose an investigation contrasted with the necessary internal unity and the relevant contributions that characterize the contents of a scientific publication. The investigations presented to the Journal will have between 3,000 and 6,000 words (neither the bibliography, nor the footnotes, nor the abstract will be counted).

These articles will be submitted to the Double Blind Peer Evaluation.

Reviews

Of recently published bibliographic works from the scope of study of the Journal. As a general rule, reviews of works published in the last two years are accepted, although given the importance and relevance of any review, this limit may be extended. The reviews will cover between 1,000 and 2,000 words.

The authors will send their articles to XIPHIAS GLADIUS through the OJS3 platform.

More information (criteria regarding)

Peer review process

XIPHIAS GLADIUS only publishes articles that have the favorable opinion of the members of the Editorial Board of the journal. To do this, the blind peer verification procedure is used.

Previously, the article must pass a formal review verifying that it complies with the Publication Standards. Otherwise, the article will be returned for adaptation to the guidelines that the journal follows.

Acceptance will require the positive judgment of an expert from the Editorial Board, maintaining anonymity in the evaluation process of both the author and the evaluator. This blind peer review will determine your acceptance, your acceptance with reservations or your non-acceptance. In the case of acceptance with reservations, the article will be returned to the author for adaptation according to the evaluator’s suggestions. Once completed, it will be returned to the magazine to restart the evaluation process.

The same author may not publish articles in consecutive issues.

The authors will send their articles to XIPHIAS GLADIUS through this platform. This submission implies the transfer of all rights for future dissemination. More information (criteria regarding)

Reviewers

The journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS has Scientific Reviewers, both national and international, whose job it is to evaluate by peer review, employing a double-blind methodology. The articles selected by the Editor are sent to the reviewers who are experts in the area, to undergo a strict evaluation process. The expert may accept or reject the article, or accept it with reservations. In this last case, it may be necessary to inform the author of the recommended changes to the structure and/or content of the article. Subsequently, the article is reviewed once again, giving the author the opportunity to adapt the text to the changes suggested by the reviewer, until it is deemed fit for publication.

Criteria regarding

The journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS boasts an Editorial Board made up of researchers from Spain and other countries, who are experts in their various fields, and a Journalistic Board of doctorate researchers.

Scientific quality criteria, subject suitability, article acceptance

The journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS publishes articles orientated towards the promotion and development of knowledge concerning communication, as an area of reflection and dissemination of research that has been carried out in the Communication Sciences field, taking as a reference the fundamentals of integral humanism. Our objective is to always seek the truth and a common ground of wisdom and dialogue. The journal is dedicated to publishing research results which are original.

The Journalistic Board is tasked with deciding what the theme for each issue is to be, based on criteria including social interest and scientific and related production. It also decides in which issue each article is to be published and assesses those cases that may suppose an anomaly which needs an informed decision to be taken. The Board also ensures the implementation of the code of ethics and the mission, vision and values of the journal, guaranteeing the constant adherence to principles of rigour and research quality. They also take decisions regarding possible changes in the development of the publication.

The Review Committee uses a double blind review system, once the Journalistic Board has deemed that an article complies with the rules and norms for publication and has passed the first tests to ensure the absence of plagiarism.

The journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS publishes its organizational chart, its Council members, Board of Directors, the rules of publication, its ethical code as well as the procedure required for publication, the time frames and other useful information such as quality criteria and its open policies, on the web.

Quality criteria of the publishing procedure

The journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS is committed to its evaluation system and to maintaining the deadlines for the reception, revision, evaluation and publication of its articles.

The peer review system guarantees that only a qualified specialist will be asked to evaluate the article, with the relevant doctoral studies.

The authors will be informed at all times of the first revision process and the dates set for first acceptance or rejection (maximum 30 days) and the subsequent review process and its deadlines for acceptance or otherwise (maximum 150 days).

Edition of the articles is by means of preprint (digital text not yet reviewed) and subsequently published in paper.

Publications are annual. The journal undertakes to maintain this periodicity and that of all times of the publication process.

Said commitment is of vital importance, both in order to be able to adhere to the publication dates set, as well as guaranteeing the right of the authors to have their articles processed as quickly as possible and to be informed at all times of the point at which the article finds itself in the complete process.

The publication procedure, in detail, is the following:

1 The theme for the new issue is decided upon by the journal’s director and the Journalistic Board, based on criteria concerning what is of interest in the field of communication.

2 Articles are received and a first revision is carried out, in line with the journal’s rules and norms for publication, followed by a first anti-plagiarism check.

3 Reviewers are selected based on their expertise regarding the theme chosen, in order to ensure review quality: the selection procedure is overseen by the editor and by the national and international university professors and researchers of the Editorial Board. The number of reviewers is increased every year in order to guarantee the ability to review each speciality by pairs.

4 The author’s name and institution is removed from the article and sent to the reviewer, who also remains anonymous (the double-blind system): To preserve the integrity of the double-blind peer review process, the authors will not be told of the reviewers’ identity, nor the reviewers the author’s.

5 The reviewer receives the article and ensures that the content is in line with the publication and scientific quality requirements of the journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS.

6 The reviewer, by means of the journal’s web site area reserved for this purpose from 2017 onwards, using the OJS platform, proposes suggested changes, modifications and inclusions to the author. Subsequently, the reviewer completes a form with the relevant information regarding the article and, after the possible changes made by the author, will give his or her verdict, within the established time limits. This evaluation form will always remain in anonymity and all suggestions that is contains are communicated to the author by means of the journal secretary.

7 The work area reserved for the publication procedure of the journal has been designed to record all the exchanges between the editor and the reviewers, as well as all the evaluation comments made in the forms, and is kept in electronic storage within the restricted area of the journal. This allows the journal XIPHIAS GLADIUS to maintain its quality and transparency policy throughout the procedures adopted. It also permits the possibility of being evaluated by the accredited external institutions and evaluators, who may request for the password from the journal’s director in order to access the restricted area and verify the real use of the evaluation system employed by XIPHIAS GLADIUS.

8 The reviewers must communicate their evaluation exclusively by means of the evaluation forms. The model may be found within the restricted area of the journal’s web site. The evaluation form has a part with a score scheme of 1 to 5 points regarding criteria of originality, methodological rigour, relevance for readers, correct use of language and content structure. There is also a qualitative part to the form where remarks concerning analysis and discourse and the strengths and weaknesses of the article may be made. In a third part of the form, a synthetic judgement is made of the article as to whether or not the article is publishable or publishable with reservations. In this last case, the reviewer must offer indications or suggestions to the author, with the aim of improving the article so as to ensure quality. The evaluation form format is available to the authors, so that the evaluation criteria is clear and transparent to them.
